Open the tin and start building
The first thing you notice is how little setting up there is. Lift the lid and the tin becomes the build surface, so tiles don't slide off a tray table or roll under a car seat. Thirty pieces sit inside, alongside two sticker sheets: ten mini squares, six slim posts, four isosceles triangles, four equilateral triangles, two rhombuses, two trapezoids and two standard squares. It measures just 17.2 cm wide and 13.5 cm tall, with a carry handle, so it travels like a lunchbox.
Smaller tiles, finer builds
Mini tiles ask for more precision than full-size magnetic tiles. Children pinch each piece between thumb and forefinger to line up an edge, which builds the same pincer control needed to hold a pencil in prep. The Smart Spin™ magnets rotate freely inside each tile, so pieces find each other and click into place. That keeps the frustration of fiddly alignment low for a 3 year old, while a 6 year old can use the same pieces to plan a symmetrical castle. The slim posts and varied triangles are what make detail possible. A rocket needs a pointed nose cone. A house needs a roof pitch. A rhombus becomes a wing or a tail fin. Two sheets of reusable silicone stickers add windows, faces or details, and they peel off and reapply as the build changes.
Where it fits as they grow
At 3 to 4 years, expect flat shapes and simple enclosed houses. By 5 to 6, children start folding flat designs into 3D forms and telling stories around what they've made. The two standard squares and the mini pieces also join the rest of the Connetix range, so this works as a starter set or as a detail pack for larger builds. The tiles are non-toxic ABS plastic, BPA and phthalate free, ultrasonically sealed and riveted. Play is quiet, suits solo or shared building, and works indoors anywhere. At 450 g, it's light enough to carry in a handbag or nappy bag.
