Shop play is often where children first learn that things have value and that getting what you want takes a conversation. It builds social confidence by providing a script for interaction—greeting a customer, asking for an item, and concluding a transaction. This structured social play is excellent for children who might otherwise feel shy in unstructured groups.

In our selection process, we look for functional components that support the role-play experience. Cash registers with buttons that actually press, scanners that beep, or market stalls with clear areas for display help sustain the illusion. We also look for accessories that encourage sorting and categorising, as keeping the 'stock' organised is a valuable part of the play.
