Pull back, let go, watch it race
Press the kart's wheels to the floor, drag it backwards and feel the mechanism wind up. Let go and it shoots off with its First Friends driver sitting in the seat. Smooth floors give the longest runs, and the speed is just right for a toddler to chase on hands and knees.
Learning that their hands make things happen
The real hurdle for a toddler is cause and effect that starts with their own action. Pushing a car gives instant feedback. Pull-back asks for a short sequence: press down, drag back, release. Working that out builds the palm pressure and steady wrist control that carry over to crayons and spoons. Before they can do it, the kart freewheels, so a 12-month-old still gets to push it along and follow it with their eyes. It is a simple first step into our wider range of toy vehicles.
Room for a driver and a story
The racing driver lifts out, so the kart can run empty, stop for a pit-stop or carry a passenger in a bigger game. By around three, the race has a start line, a finish and a winner. That is the point where this stops being a cause-and-effect toy and becomes a prop for storytelling.
Made for the bumps
The kart is moulded in Tolo's brilliantly coloured plastic, built for the knocks and collisions of toddler racing. Wipe it with a soft damp cloth when it needs a clean. There are no batteries, so it is ready to race straight from the box.
