Problem Solving & Logic
At first, it's a satisfying shape sorter. They'll push the wooden blocks through the matching slots, listening to the solid 'clunk' as they drop inside. But then comes the twist—literally. To get them back, they have to solve the puzzle of the locked doors. This is a brilliant tool for the 18-month-old who is ready to move beyond simple stacking. It introduces cause-and-effect logic and refines the complex wrist rotation needed for turning doorknobs and keys in the real world.

Janod Push & Pull Toys Janod - Essentials Shape Box With Keys
This is an ideal challenge for toddlers who have mastered basic peg puzzles and are looking for 'how things work' toys.
  • The Tinkerer (18m - 2 years): For the child who is fascinated by your house keys and always wants to unlock the front door.
  • The persistent solver (2 - 3 years): Older toddlers will enjoy the speed challenge of sorting and unlocking against the clock.
  • The sensory seeker: The combination of smooth wood, transparent plastic, and mechanical clicking sounds provides rich feedback.

The Discovery Phase

Most toddlers master shape sorting around 18 months, but they often lose interest once the task becomes too easy. This box extends the life of the play by adding a second, more complex layer: retrieval. Once the six blocks (one triangle, two circles, three squares) are safely inside, your child can see them through the transparent windows but can't reach them. This creates a natural, motivating problem to solve.

Cracking the Code

This is where the colour-coded keys come in. They'll notice the red key matches the red door—a subtle introduction to logic and pattern recognition. Guiding the key into the slot and finding the strength to twist it engages the forearm muscles and fine motor precision. The 'click' of the lock opening provides instant feedback, validating their effort and encouraging them to try the next one.

Thoughtful Design

Janod has designed this with parents in mind too. The keys are attached to a magnetic keychain that snaps onto the handle, so they won't end up lost under the sofa. The base is angled slightly to help the blocks slide out once the door is opened, reducing frustration for younger players.

Measuring approximately 26cm wide x 9cm deep x 12.7cm high, it's substantial enough to sit firmly on the floor during play but compact enough to store on a low shelf.
