Open the stall and the roles sort themselves out
Set the produce out on the stall and the play starts almost straight away. This shop and market role play set gives each child a clear job. One child becomes the shopkeeper, arranging the fruit and vegetables, weighing them on the scales and working the card machine. The other becomes the customer, following a themed shopping list or wandering the stall and choosing freely.
Where the learning happens
The 29 fruit and vegetable pieces are made from FSC-certified wood, so they are sturdy enough to sort, stack and carry in small hands. Four slate boards let you set the prices, which turns a pretend shop into a real maths task: the shopkeeper reads the price, adds up the total, then takes payment in coins or by bank card. The shopping lists give the customer something to find and tick off, which builds early reading and matching skills without feeling like a lesson. Counting out coins and handing back change gives children a concrete reason to practise one-to-one counting, then simple addition and subtraction as they get older. Shopkeeper and customer also have to take turns, ask politely and agree on what something costs, which builds the turn-taking and negotiation skills children use in a classroom.
Compact, quiet and grows with them
The set is compact, so it suits a kitchen table, a play corner or a quiet afternoon indoors. Coins clinking and chatter are the loudest it gets. At around 3 years children focus on weighing, serving and pretending. By 5 or 6 they are reading the lists independently, adding prices and managing the whole transaction themselves. Write simple one or two coin prices on the slate boards for younger children, then move to larger numbers as their counting develops. Not suitable for children under 3 years because of small parts.
