Seven dogs, one busy salon
The set arrives with a full cast: giant poodle, husky, beagle, bull terrier, dachshund, Shih Tzu and Scottie dog. Each has a distinct shape, so children quickly sort them by personality. The poodle is the diva, the dachshund is the wriggler who won't sit still. That is the starting point for the kind of character-driven pretend play that stretches language well beyond "woof". The salon itself is built around a real grooming sequence. There is a washing area with a shower head and three towels, a grooming table with a brush, and a self-standing back wall where the hair dryer and clippers plug in. Children carry each dog from step to step, and that order matters. Remembering that the bath comes before the blow-dry is early sequencing, the same skill behind following a morning routine or a classroom instruction with several steps.
Small hands, careful work
The dogs, brush, dryer and clippers are scaled for small hands. Lifting a dog onto the table, fitting the dryer into its slot and settling a blanket around a freshly clipped beagle all call for controlled pincer and wrist movements. Those are the same grips needed later for holding a pencil and turning a page. The wooden pieces click and clack quietly on the table, so this works well on the living room floor or at a play table while you get on with dinner.
Room for the whole story
Three podiums and a trophy turn the end of each session into a show. Children decide who wins, who comes second and why, which opens up fair-play conversations and turn-taking when siblings or friends join in. The play grows with them. At 3, children bath and dry one dog at a time. By 5 or 6, they run appointments, keep a waiting list and judge a full competition. Bones in a bowl and a blanket give the dogs somewhere to go after the show. Because the set is scaled to fit the Tender Leaf Toys doll's house world, the dogs can also move into the house, the garden or the family's other wooden sets. Set up, the salon measures 40 x 30 x 16cm, so it fits comfortably on a low shelf, a play table or a corner of the bedroom floor.
