Words they can pick up, move and check
Sit a child down with this set and the first thing you'll notice is how physical the learning becomes. Each of the 45 introductory sight words has a magnetic backing, so a child picks one up, says it, and presses it onto the board. If it's the wrong word, it lifts straight off again. Lifting and placing each magnet also builds the finger control children need for writing.
That matters for the early reader who guesses at words instead of recognising them. Sight words are the short, common words that turn up on almost every page of a first reader. Handling them over and over, rather than seeing them once on a worksheet, helps them become automatic.
From recognising to writing
The board does a second job. Flip it over and the lines on the reverse give children a place to practise writing the words they've just built, using the whiteboard pen in the box. It's a natural next step once they can read a word: build it, say it, then write it.
Play is quiet, with only the soft click of magnets and the squeak of a pen. That makes it easy to use at the kitchen table, in a reading corner, or alongside a sibling doing homework. Children at the kindergarten stage, around 4 to 6 years, can work through it alone, and a parent can step in to set a challenge such as 'find the word that starts with the same sound as your name'.
Where it fits
This is an introductory set, so it suits children who are just starting to read whole words. It pairs well with a home reading routine, the books coming home from school and, once they're ready for a game format, ThinkFun - Zingo! Sight Words Game. As their word recognition grows, the same words become building blocks for simple sentences, which is where the practice starts to pay off. You'll find more options in our Literacy & Numeracy range.
The set includes small magnetic pieces and is not suitable for children under 3 years.
