Seeing a number before you write it
Place the 1 cm cube next to the 10 cm rod and a child sees, straight away, that ten is ten times bigger than one. This is the idea behind Cuisenaire rods: each length stands for a number, so children can compare, swap and combine quantities without counting on their fingers. With 222 pieces, there is enough to build a full ten-step staircase, several times over.
The set holds 12 of each rod from 5 cm to 10 cm, 18 rods at 4 cm, 30 at 3 cm, 36 at 2 cm and 66 cubes at 1 cm. The generous supply of short pieces matters. It is the small rods that children combine most often, and running short of them is a common reason a smaller set stalls.
What the rods are actually teaching
At around 3 years, the first job is comparing: which rod is longer, which is shorter, which two match. Sorting them into a staircase from smallest to largest builds the ordering skills that sit underneath counting. Picking up a 1 cm cube and lining it up neatly also builds fine motor control and the grip children use to hold a pencil.
By 4 to 5 years, the six activity cards come into play. They run from easy to difficult, so a child can copy a pattern, then work out how to build it with different rods. Finding every pair of rods that equals the 10 cm rod is a hands-on way to learn number bonds to 10, the fact family school maths leans on most in the early years.
From 6 to 8 years, the same rods carry heavier ideas. A 5 cm rod becomes a half, a 2 cm rod becomes a fifth, and a row of four 3 cm rods shows what 4 x 3 looks like. It is rare for one set to cover this much ground, and it is why the set earns its place in classrooms and homeschool corners alike. It sits well alongside our other literacy and numeracy toys for early maths.
Size, care and where it fits
The sturdy wooden storage tray measures about 25.5 x 21.5 x 5 cm and the whole set weighs around 1.1 kg. It slides onto a bookshelf, and the tray can sit on the table beside a child as they work. The rods are made from sustainably sourced rubberwood, sanded smooth and coloured with non-toxic food colouring and a sealant. Wipe clean with a damp cloth and do not immerse in water.
Play is quiet, with the soft tap of wood on wood, which suits a lounge room, a bedroom or a shared table. The 1 cm cubes are small, so this set is for children aged 3 and over, with adult supervision around younger siblings.
